More than three-quarters of the world’s forest land is under threat from deforestation, but there’s still no clear definition of what that means for wood.
It’s a question that’s being raised by a project that is bringing together scientists, architects and woodworkers to explore how the new technologies of “carpentry” and “plastering” can help solve the problem.
In an interview with The Independent, one of the project’s founders, Chris White, said: “We’re looking at how we can make it possible to get the benefits of wood into the homes of our kids and our grandkids, without the environmental impacts of land clearing.”
The project has partnered with the Wood and Wood Products Association (WMPA) and Woodworkers for Global Peace to explore ways in which wood could help tackle the problem of deforestation and how its products could be used to help the world achieve its climate goals.

WFC is often used in buildings for its high strength and stiffness.

For example, in our new project we are using the Wood Projects for Global Development (WPFD) project to use WFC as a composite material for our house,” said White.
“There’s also a project in the US called The Treehouse in the Forest (TIFF) where we are also using wood as a composite for the exterior of our house.”
A recent study in the journal Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Design showed that wood has the ability to support the building of high-density urban projects.
“In terms of sustainability, wood is being really underutilised in our current landscape,” said the project co-founder.
“What we’re trying to do is to make wood more relevant to building, rather than just being used for the building itself.
It is really important for the future of the industry to use this technology and we think this is a very promising way to do that.”
White hopes that the Wood Project will bring the technology to the world stage and will help to help solve some of the environmental challenges facing the wood sector.
