The Democratic National Committee is hosting a fundraiser for Sen. Bernie Sanders on Friday night, but it’s going to be all about the “I’m With Her” slogan.
Sanders has been under fire for his controversial remarks about women’s bodies and his criticism of the U.S. military during the 2016 election cycle.
In one speech, he described U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as a “sexist pig.”
In the aftermath of that speech, many women and people of color in the U and O have been organizing to demand an apology from the candidate.
“It’s clear that Sen. Sanders has not changed his tune on the issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, class and the treatment of women,” Jill Stein, a Green Party presidential candidate, said in a statement.
“This is about his commitment to fighting for a world where everyone is treated equally, regardless of gender, race, class or sexuality,” said Alicia Garza, a spokeswoman for the Green Party.
“He’s still talking about women as if he’s the only one who can talk about them, and his tone on women’s rights is just as sexist and racist as it was last night.”
The fundraiser will be held at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., at 8 p.m.
It is expected to draw a record crowd, and some people are predicting that it will exceed the $10 million raised by the 2016 presidential campaign.
It’s not clear how many people will show up for the event, though, and it will be a difficult crowd for the DNC to keep on top of.
Some Democrats are also concerned that the event will be overshadowed by the Republican National Convention, which is slated to take place next week.
